Youth groups campaign for citizenship through mother

2015-01-20

Bagmati, Kathmandu, Kathmandu

Two days ahead of the political parties’ self–imposed deadline to promulgate a new constitution, various youth groups on Monday staged demonstrations demanding citizenship be made an agenda in the ongoing constitution writing debates in the Constituent Assembly. About 200 demonstrators blew whistles as a symbolic protest to pressurize the government and political parties to amend the proposed provision, which requires both father and mother to be Nepali for a child to acquire Nepali citizenship. They argued that the provision could render thousands of children of single mothers stateless. “As the political parties are reportedly inching closer to a consensus on disputed issues, they seem to have completely ignored this issue,” said Subin Mulmi, coordinator of the Youth Network of Civil Society. People from different walks of life took part in the demonstration. Former CA members Sapana Pradhan Malla, Hisila Yami, and Founder and Director of Maiti Nepal Anuradha Koirala also showed solidarity with the campaign.
