Opposition declares phase-wise protest

The Maoist-led 30-party alliance has declared new protest programmes against the move of the ruling parties to form the Questionnaire Committee and carry forward the constitution making process “unilaterally”. The events include picketing District Administrative Offices and holding mass meetings. As per the schedule, the agitating bloc will put up black flags in public spaces across the country on February 12, followed by a joint address of the cadres by senior leaders of the alliance on February 14. On that day, UCPN (Maoist) Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal will address cadres in Kathmandu while his deputies Baburam Bhattarai and Narayan Kaji Shrestha will attend rallies in Nepalgunj and Jhapa, respectively. Bijaya Gachhadar of the Madhesi Janadhikar Forum-Loktantrik, Mahanta Thakur of the Tarai Madhes Loktantrik Party, Rajendra Mahato of the Sadbhawana Party and Upendra Yadav of the Madhesi Janadhikar Forum-Nepal will address mass meetings in Rajbiraj, Bhairahawa, Janakpur and Biratnagar, respectively. The alliance is also scheduled to hold rallies on February 21. The first phase will go till February 28 while the second will conclude on March 29. The “decisive” movement begins on March 30. The protest programmes include mass meetings and picketing of government offices. The alliance is scheduled to hold a mass meeting on February 28 in Kathmandu. Sadbhawana Party General Secretary Manish Suman said each CA member in the alliance has to contribute Rs 20,000 and the parties that do not have representation in the Assembly will also have to chip in the same amount. The parties have pledged to bring in a specified number of supporters for the protest. Maoists top the list with 100,000 followed by MJF-Loktantrik’s 15,000 and MJF-Nepal’s 10,000 cadres and supporters. Sadbhawana and TMLP have committed 5,000 supporters each.
