Musahar children dropping out of school due to caste based discrimination in Parsa

2015-02-17

Madhes, Parsa, Birgunj

10-year-old Badhu Musahar stopped going to school because of the discrimination done by the teachers. He said that they teach nicely and behave properly with other children but to him and other Musahar children the teachers discriminate and tell them not to come close. Just 200 meters away from the household of Musahar community there is a National Primary school. There are 4 teachers in the school and all of them are non-Dalits. Of the approximately 43 Musahar children admitted in the school hardly 20/22 children attend the school regularly because of the teacher's discriminatory practice. The children who do not go to a school play the whole day long and also go to work with their parents. Chetanman Prashad Teli, the principal of the school however denied that the teachers had discriminated against the Musahar children. District education officer of Parsa district, Barakhu Prashad Rajak said that teachers cannot discriminate any children in school. He further said that the education office would immediately look into the matter and punish if anyone is found guilty of discriminating against the Mushar children.
