2015-03-15

Bagmati, Kathmandu, Kathmandu

The alliance of 30 opposition parties led by UCPN (Maoist) unveiled its second phase of protests to press the ruling parties to draft the new constitution through consensus. However, the opposition front has not shut the door for talks. The front said the ruling parties have not shown seriousness about consensus on the disputed issues of new constitution. A meeting of the alliance convened on Sunday finalised programmes for its second phase of protests starting from March 19 to April 9. The programmes include mass assembly, demonstration, sit-in and general strike. UCPN (Maoist) Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal will announce the decision about their protests at a press meet. The opposition parties resorted to agitation on Jan 25 after the ruling alliance initiated Constituent Assembly proceedings to resolve the disputed issues of new constitution—chiefly federalism, forms of government and electoral system—notwithstanding the stiff resistance from the opposition parties . The opposition front had concluded their first round of agitation after holding a mass assembly at Khulamunch in Kathmandu demanding for the new statute through consensus. The front decided to go for next round of protests in order to pile pressure on the ruling parties after the talks convened at the behest of Prime Minister Sushil Koirala failed to bear positive result.
