Official receives ‘death threat’

2015-04-06

Panauti Municipality Chairman of the CPN-UML Sahadev Thapa and activists of the Youth Association Nepal (YAN) have allegedly issued death threat to the municipality’s Executive Officer Indira Thapa. The CPN-UML activists threatened to kill Thapa for not allowing the party lawmaker Ramhari Subedi to speak during a program held to lay the foundation stone of a stadium on Monday. Thapa and YAN Panauti Chairman Sabin Tamrakar threatened to kill the executive officer for trying to bypass the UML at the behest of the Nepali Congress (NC) and UCPN (Maoist). Indira claimed that lawmaker Subedi, who is also the UML district chairman, also telephoned her using threatening language. Deputy Prime Minister and Federal Affairs and Local Development Minister Prakash Man Singh had laid the foundation stone of the stadium. Only two officials--Executive Officer Thapa and Chief Engineer of Division Building Office in Dhulikhel Asta Suwal--addressed the program. District chiefs of all parties and lawmakers were invited to the function, but the UML lawmaker was expressing displeasure for not being given a chance to address the event. “I have been receiving threats of being killed with abusive language,” the municipality chief said, “I have only played the role of a facilitator. I have not taken sides.” The Youth Association has issued a 24-hour ultimatum demanding that the executive officer apologize. Lawmaker Subedi admitted that the party cadres could have been angered for bypassing their leaders.
