After a deal with the local administration, the month-long protest in Gaur, the district headquarters, has been called off from Wednesday morning. Locals backed by business community and political parties had been demonstrating against the government decision to establish service center in Chandranigahapur since March 16. Even though the government withdrew its decision last Friday to move service centers of the Land Survey and Land Revenue Offices, the death of a local protestor Ashish Thakur by a van of Armed Police Force had enraged the residents of the area. A six-point agreement was reached between administration and protesters in presence of Federation of Nepali Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FNCCI) Rautahat Chapter, Federation of Nepali Journalists (FNJ), Rautahat among others, informed Chief District Officer Madan Bhujel. FNCCI, Rautahat President Kanthamani Jaiswal said an accord was reached to recommend announcement of Thakur as a martyr, provide Rs 800,000 in compensation to the deceased’s family, form a probe team to investigate incidents during the protest and provide a government job to one family member of the deceased. Marketplaces in the district headquarters have reopened since early morning after the strike was called off.
