Court Slaps Eight-Month Jail Term for Caste Discrimination

The District Court has slapped eight months of imprisonment and fined Rs. 5000 each to six persons of Jagannath6 for their involvement in caste discrimination.

A single bench of justice at the district court, Narayan Prasad Dhital has given verdict of eight months of imprisonment and Rs. 5000 fine each in the names of Padam Bahadur Shahi, Chakra Bahadur Shahi, Ram Bahadur Shahi, Kuber Jung Shahi, Om Jung Shahi and Keshav Shahi on November 30.

Amrit BK of Jagannath6 had filed a case of untouchability and ethnic discrimination against them at the district court on November 10. Amrit had an inter-caste marriage with Sabita Shahi, daughter of Padam Bahadur Shahi on August 31, 2009. Since then, the family and its relatives had been discriminating Amrit with derogative terms. Ultimately, the Shahi family snatched Sabita and separated her from Amrit on October 7, 2009.

The case filed by Amrit at the court states that Shahi family had also forced him to pay the family Rs. 60,000 for the inter-caste marriage.
