Police on Saturday opened fired at an absconding notorious gangster outside the Club Babylon Discotheque in Sundhara. A police team deployed from the Metropolitan Police Crime Division (MPCD) under the command of DSP Umesh Thapa opened three rounds of bullets at Rawanjeet Tamang at around 1:45 am today.
The Kathmandu District Court had sentenced Tamang to 10 years in jail for drug smuggling and abduction charges. Tamang, who was doing time at the Sindhupalchok Jail absconding after the April 25 mega-earthquake destroyed the prison and during that time total of 216 inmates, including Tamang, escaped. He was shot three times in the knee and below the knee.
Along with Tamang, Umesh Shrestha of Bhaktapur was also arrested. Police said that they were forced to open fire at Tamang after he along with his friends tried to manhandle the police personnel. Police informed that Tamang, who sustained bullet injuries on his left leg, is receiving treatment at the Bir Hospital. Further investigation into the incident is underway, police said.
