Twenty children living in a child care centre in the Capital have been rescued by Central Child Welfare Board (CCWB) on Sunday. According to CCWB, the children had to be rescued because Maya Ghar, the child care centre based at Kuleshwor failed to meet the minimum standard including sanitation and hygiene among other things during its regular monitoring. “This place is extremely dirty, and the hostel is not big enough to accommodate all the children and its financial transactions are also doubtful,” said Namuna Bhusal, programme officer of CCWB, who was involved in the rescue operation. Maya Ghar has also been accused of falsely stating that all children residing there are orphans. “We had warned them to follow our criteria a couple of times but they paid no attention and now we have also found that they had been sheltering children who have both their parents alive,” said Chairperson of CCWB Dilli Ram Giri. The board will now investigate the whereabouts of these children’s parents and reunite them and look for a long term solution for those who are genuine orphans. Maya Ghar, which was registered five years ago, has been providing shelter to 27 children aged between 6-13 from Gorkha, Rasuwa, Dhading and Kalikot. Out of the total 27 children, seven are relatives of the members of the child care centre and the remaining children have been shifted to a transit home on Sunday.
