Dozen protesters, 2 cops injured in Itahari

At least a dozen people and two policemen were injured in a clash after the police arrested a religious leader Shreenibas during a demonstration organised to demand Hindu state in Itahari, Sunsari on Tuesday. The clash erupted after the security personnel stopped a rally including the religious leader. Police had to fire nine rounds of tear gas shells to contain the situation. Rashtriya Prajatantra Party-Nepal Chairman Ram Prasad Pokharel among others were injured after police baton-charged the demonstrators. He has been taken to Dharan-based BP Koirala Health and Science Academy for treatment. The mob of protesters apparently led by RPP-N have been demonstrating in Itahari for the past four days demanding Hindu state and removal of secularism term from the new constitution. Itahari market has been shut-down following the clash. Central coordinator of Baidhik Sanatan Hindurajya Nepal joint struggle committee, Kumar Bahadur Thapa, condemned the incident accusing police excesses. He has demanded unconditional release of the arrested religious leader.  update...... at least 42 people, including 9 security personnel were injured in a clash at different places in Itahari Sub-Metropolitan City, Sunsari. The clashes erupted between people who support inclusion of Nepal being declared a Hindu state in the constitution, led by Rashtriya Prajatantra Party-Nepal (RPP-N) when police arrested Shreeniwas, a religious leader from the demonstration. ___________ Update July 30: Spiritual leader Kamal Nayanacharya on Thursday said that he will call on Prime Minister Sushil Koirala and high ranking officials of security forces regarding police 'atrocity' against their protests in Itahari. "I will strongly present my views regarding police atrocity to Prime Minister and high ranking officials of security force on Itahari protest," he said in a press meet at Itahari today. "Police intervened the protest without knowing the motive behind it," he added. At least 53 were injured when a clash ensued between the agitating Hindu protestors and the police in Itahari on Tuesday. The spiritual leader on Wednesday even warned that he could sack Area Police Chief of Itahari DSP Binod Sharma.
