2015-07-30

Bagmati, Kathmandu, Kathmandu

Women human rights activists today gathered at Babar Mahal to organize a rally to pressurize the government for the formulation of a women-friendly constitution. Despite advocating for the recognition of women's rights as human rights, the government's indifference to their demands has caused fury among the women rights activists. The protest activities started from 10 am onwards with the participants chanting slogans to ensure women's rights, ensure the bodily integrity of women, and provide citizenship from the name of mother, among others. The rally marched from Babar Mahal to New Baneshwor and turned into a corner assembly, where various human rights expressed their views at the program. Dr. Renu Rajbhandari, Chairperson of Women's Rehabilitation Center (WOREC) and National Alliance of Women Human Rights Defenders (NAWHRD), said that the lawmakers are not taking into account the demands of women. So, they should be pressurized to reformulate the constitution that guarantees women's rights. Sharmila Karki, from NGO Federation, Kalyani Shah from Mahila Suraksha Dabab Samuha, Benu Maya Gurung from Alliance against Trafficking in Woman and Children in Nepal (AATWIN), Bimala Tamang from Mahila Ekata Samaj, Radha Poudel from Action Works and Pratibha Pandey from Jagaruk Nagarik Samuha were among key speakers at the program. All the speakers emphasized the need to pressurize government until the proposition of the women human rights activists are incorporated in the constitution. There was overwhelming participation of activists and civil society organizations, including WOREC, NAWHRD, Forum for Women, Law, and Development (FWLD), AATWIN, Sankalpa, Tewa, Legal Aid, and Consultancy Center (LACC), Hamri Bahini, Community Action Center (CAC), Mahila Ekata Samaj, Pourakhi, NGO Federation, Shakti Samuha, Women's Foundation, and Women Forum for Women in Nepal (WOFOWON). The protest activities that started on July 30 will continue until the government addresses the demands of women human rights activists.
