Take stern action against those involved in sacrifice of a boy: NHRC

2015-08-03

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Sunday urged the government to take stern action against those involved in the act of 'sacrifice' of a boy. Stating that its attention has been drawn toward the murder of 10-year-old Jeevan Kohara of Kudiya-4, Marchahawa in Nawalparasi district, the human rights watchdog asked the government to take strong legal action against the culprits for the gruesome crime. “Killing a boy in a superstition that his sacrifice will cure the illness of another is punishable by law,” NHRC said, “The commission requests the government for maximum punishment to the perpetrators and immediate relief and compensation to the family of the deceased.” NHRC has further asked the government to bring forward awareness programs saying that Nepali society is still in the grip of extreme superstition. The incident came to light after five people were arrested in the district for allegedly killing a boy ‘in an act of sacrifice to cure the disease of a teenager’.
