National Human Rights Commission has called on the protesting sides to seek alternatives to bandhs. Saying that the bandhs called in various districts against the provisions to be included in the proposed constitution had hit the lives of people hard, NHRC issued a press statement on August 20. The constitutional rights body also urged the concerned sides to find alternatives to bandhs and reach conclusion through dialogue. The rights watchdog has asked the government to provide appropriate compensation to the family of those killed during the protests in various parts. "NHRC requests the police not to use unnecessary force during peaceful protests, sit-ins and also appeals the protesting sides to make all protest programs peaceful," the statement said, adding that the use of excessive force leading to deaths in some districts is a sensitive issue.
