Perpetrators abusing a woman on witch allegation jailed in Kaski

District Police Office has sent two women to jail after a woman filed a complaint that they were roaming free despite being convicted by the District Court. According to the victim, Maiti Thapa, 50, and her daughter Bissu KC of Campuschok in Beni Municipality had force-fed her human excreta on October 8, accusing her of being a witch. Both spent 23 days in pretrial custody and were later released on bail of Rs 43,000 each. District Court judge Gayatri Prasad Regmi convicted them of the charge on January 2, 2015, as per 10 b number of Chapter on Miscellaneous of the National Code sending them jail and also fining them. Then, mother and daughter moved Baglung Appellate Court where the division bench of chief judge Kedra Prasad Chalise and judge Agni Prasad Thapaliya upheld the District Court verdict. Maiti Thapa and her daughter were sent to prison for four months and fined Rs 10,000 each. The anti-witchcraft allegation act can send anyone to jail from three months to two years and fine Rs 5,000 to 25,000 or both if convicted of abusing the female or male victims. The police arrested both of them on September 7 and handed them over to the District Court and thence to the jail as per the court order, DSP Hira Giri said.
