Police thrash journalist, breaks camera

Police have beaten up Mahottari correspondent of Mountain Television Bikram Rauniyar while he was returning from covering the protest in Jaleshwor. According to Rauniyar, who is also the Secretary of Federation of Nepali Journalist Mahottari branch, police beat him up and broke his camera though he showed his identity card to the police on September 7. The victim has sutained bruises all over his body. His camera worth rupees 100,000 have been damaged in the incident. He received treatment at Janakpur Zonal Hospital. "The policemen beat me with butt of the gun, lathi and kicked me even when I informed that I am a journalist. They snatched my camera and smashed it on the road breaking into six pieces," he said. FNJ Mahottari, Madhesi Journalist Association, INSEC, Journalists Development Center issued press releases condeming the incident. They said that the incident is a violation of press freedom.
