Twenty-two Chhaupadi sheds have been dismantled in an attempt to minimize violence against women at Rajyauda VDC of Attital VDC in the district.
As Rajyauda village is most affected by Chhaupadi system in the Attital VDC, the sheds were dismantled with initiatives of locals from (14 to 20) May, Ratan Kunwar, VDC secretary said on May 22.
A woman during menstruation period and post-partum period is required to stay in Chhaupadi sheds as per the system. Several women staying in Chhaupadi sheds become victims of rape while some died due to snakebites.
Before launching the campaign to dismantle the Chhaupadi sheds, the VDC had made people aware against the ill-practices of the system with posters, pamphlets and interactions by visiting the houses of locals in the village, Kunwar said.
There are 150 Chhaupadi sheds at Dhimada village in ward no 8 of Attital VDC and preparation are underway to dismantle the sheds there by making the locals aware about consequences of the system, Kunwar added.
