Madhesi front cadres block imports from India at border entry points

2015-09-24

Province 1, Morang, Biratnagar

The imports of petroleum and other supplies from India and third countries have been lying at Indo-Nepal border areas near Biratnagar due to the blockade imposed by the United Democratic Madhesi Front (UDMF) on Friday, the second consecutive day of obstruction in the industrial hub of Nepal. Similar blockades are being carried out by the Madhesi protestors at the border areas on the Nepali side of Birgunj, Janakpur and Nepalgunj as well. According to Birendra Parasar, chief of Biratnagar Customs Agents Association (BCAA), the vehicles and containers carrying the imports for Nepal are halted at the Jogbani area of India. Over 500 lorries and containers carrying the imports have been left stranded on a stretch of 12-km Jogbani-Farbishgunj road section, according to the Indian Customs Office based in Jogbani. Checking of the imports has been delayed after truck drivers and agents of the Indian customs office have stopped working, citing insecurity, said an official of the Indian customs office. "We've requested Indian customs officers many times to allow the imports to Nepal but in vain," said BCAA chief Parasar. Although the Indian vehicles have stopped their movement to Nepal, there is no problem for the Nepali vehicles to enter India and bring back the imports, according to Krishna Basnet, chief of Biratnagar Customs Office. "On Friday morning, 150 vehicles entered into the Indian side to transport the goods and fuel," said Basnet. "Police have been escorting those vehicles during the transportation to the Nepali side." The Indo-Nepal border at Birgunj is the major gateway to India, which is used to import around 60 percent of petroleum products from depots of Indian Oil Corporation, besides other supplies. The containers loaded with imports from India have been blocked at Indo-Nepal border of Birgunj as hundreds of demonstrators of the front have been imposing the blockade for the last two days. Local traders from Raxaul, India have been providing foods for the agitators staging protests at Indo-Nepal border, according to Anil Kumar Sinha, a civil society leader of Raxaul. Police lobbed dozen rounds of teargas shells to disperse the demonstrators blocking the border. However, they have continued their demonstration, according to Pradeep Yadav, Parsa district chief of Federal Socialist Party Nepal. "Police have thrashed the demonstrators and used excessive force to foil their peaceful protest," Yadav alleged. Rajesh Man Singh, a leader of the agitating UDMF, said, "We'll continue our protests until the government fulfills our demands." Meanwhile, Mitra Lal Regmi, chief of Birgunj Customs Office told Republica that no imports have been made through this border on Friday. In Janakpur, UDMF cadres and leaders blocked the Indo-Nepal border checkpoint between Janakpur and Jaynagar as a form of protest. SSB uncooperative to allow entry of containers Seema Surkshya Bal (SSB) personnel of India are reportedly not cooperating to allow container trucks carrying goods from India to Nepal via the Nepalgunj border. As many as 88 containers have been left stranded at Rupaidiha market of India on Friday. Fifty three of them are petroleum tankers while the remaining 35 trucks are loaded with other supplies, according to police Sub-Inspector Bishnu Giri of Area Police Office, Jamunaha. Although the SSB on Friday allowed 27 container trucks to enter Nepal after a long dilly-dallying, the SSB said they will not allow petroleum trucks to enter Nepal.
