Solidarity rally for Madhes agitation

Employees of various governmental and non-governmental organisations, including teachers staged a silent rally expressing solidarity with the general strike called by United Democratic Madhesi Front, today. Accusing the government of being apathetic to the genuine demands of Madhesi people, they held a silent rally from BP Chowk that concluded at the same place. They carried placards, that read autonomous Madhes state, proportional representation at all levels and martyrs’ status to those who died during the recent Tarai agitation. They tied black bands as a sign of protest. Meanwhile, teachers aligned to Federation of Nepal Teachers, staged demonstration expressing solidarity with the strike, in Gaur, today. They marched from the district education office through different parts of the town chanting slogans against the government. They accused the government of being a mute spectator despite almost two-month long agitation. They expressed concern about the adverse impact caused by closure of hundreds of educational institutions. They claimed they had to resort to the streets fearing the worst for the educational institutions. They demanded that the government hold talks with the agitating forces and settle the issues at the earliest.
