2012-06-18

Kathmandu / June 18

Five students have been arrested for showing black flags to Prime Minister Dr. Baburam Bhattarai in Tribhuwan International Airport (TIA) area in Kathmandu on June 18.

The arrestees have been identified as Ram Prasad Adhikari, Niranjan Thapa, Caesar Bhatta, Ujjwan Budhathoki and Pashupati Shah, police said.

Some students slipped through security cordon, entered the TIA and greeted PM Bhattarai with black flags. However, airport police arrested the students and detained them in the airport.

Cadres affiliated to Nepal Congress and UML showed black flags to PM Bhattarai while he was leaving for Rio de Janerio, Brazil to attend the Rio-20 UN conference. Hundreds of demonstrators staged demonstration outside TIA, saying that a caretaker PM should not embark on the visit. However, PM Bhattarai entered the airport amid tight security and protests.

A clash also flared after the security personnel tried to disperse the agitating students in the roads. Students vandalized two vehicles belonging to the Foreign Ministry (Ba 1 Jha 7966) and Home Ministry (Ba 1 Jha 5453).

A team led by PM Bhattarai is scheduled to attend the Rio-20 UN conference in Rio de Janerio, Brazil scheduled for June 20-22.
