Training of Trainers on “NGO Engagements with United Nations Treaty Based Mechanisms” began with the initiation of Human Rights Treaty Monitoring Coordination Committee (HRTMCC), secretariat INSEC in support of Australian Aid in Kathmandu from June 20 to June 22, 2012. On this TOT program, 24 participants from eight sub committees’ members of HRTMCC have been participating. The objective of the program is to enhance the capacity of members’ organizations working in coordination with human rights treaty bodies mechanisms.
Gauri Pradhan, Hon’ble Commissioner of National Human Rights Commission, Dr. Gopal Krishna Siwakoti, Kapil Aryal, Asst. Professor, Kathmandu School of Law, Advocates; Raju Chapagain, Sabin Shrestha and Rabin Subedi will facilitate three days TOT program.
The inaugural session was chaired by Subodh Raj Pyakurel, chairperson of INSEC and on behalf of HRTMCC secretariat. Bijay Raj Gautam, Executive Director of INSEC highlighted the objective of the program and delivered his welcome speech. Dr. Gopal Krishna Siwakoti, president of INHURED International and coordinator of ICCPR subcommittee on behalf of facilitators delivered his remarks on the inaugural ceremony. He highlighted the objective behind the establishment of HRTMCC and its activities. Furthermore, he informed the basic concepts of human rights during his keynote speech.
Damien Dunn, Deputy Head of the Mission , Australia informed about the human rights programs and activities conducted by Australian Government in Nepal . Similarly, he mentioned his concern about the security of human rights defenders and wished for the success of the program. Subodh Raj Pyakurel, chairperson of INSEC on his concluding remarks of inaugural ceremony stated that Nepal has no weak laws to protect the human rights however; impunity is being the causative factor and obstacles to establish the rule of law within the country. He further stated that INSEC has been continuously pressuring to ratify the international human rights treaties.
