Limbuwan Bandh Affects Normal Life in Eastern Districts

Kathmandu/ December 11 Normal life in the districts of eastern region has been affected due to the indefinite general strike called by the Federal Limbuwan State Council (FLSC) on December 11. The strike was called to protest non-representation of FLSC in the State Restructuring Commission (SRC) formed recently. FLSC cadres from nine districts in the eastern region have imposed the general strike stating that the government did not abide by the 5-point deal which was reached with the FLSC on March 19, 2008. One of points of the agreement states that the government would appoint Limbuwan representative in the SRC. INSEC Dhankuta representative, Santosh Ruchal reported that passengers bound to different destinations have been stranded in Dhankuta as vehicles stayed off the road due to the bandh. Studies of some 58588 students of private and government schools were affected as schools remained closed because of the bandh. Industries, shops and market also remained closed in Dhankuta. Ilam representative, Ashok Kumar Bantawa stated that vehicles except motorbikes plying in short and long routes to and from Ilam did not ply in Mechi Highway leaving hundreds of passengers stranded. The strike will continue until the demand was met, FLsC central member Gopal Thebe said. Panchthar representative Sadip Rai reported that educational institutions, markets, shops and transportation service remained shut due to the bandh. FLSC central vice chairperson Machhindra Begha said that the agitation will continue until the rights of Limbuwan people was established. Sunsari representative Sukdev Chaudhari said that the bandh had its effect in the areas like Dharan, Itahari, Tarahara, however, it had no effects in the southern parts of the district.
