KATHMANDU: A total of 96 cases of gender-based violence was recorded in Nepal in the past 30 days, a non-governmental organisation working for women’s rights said today. Women in Nepal are still suffering from physical and mental torture, said Women’s Rehabilitation Centre (WOREC). A press statement issued by the organisation said some women were killed by their in-laws for failing to bring sufficient dowry with them. The centre said it has recorded 96 Gender-based Violence (GBV) cases nationwide during the month of Bhadra (mid August-mid September). Among the cases, 42 were related to domestic violence, 26 to physical assaults, 10 to mental torture and two to polygamy, said the report adding that 10 murder cases and four attempt to murder cases were also recorded in the past 30 days. WOREC said 11 women became victims of social violence –– four were accused of practicing witchcraft and six were beaten up. The report also showed that 13 women were raped, two were subjected to attempt to rape and five to sexual violence. The organisation had recorded 114 cases of gender-based violence against women last month.
