Lumbini, Banke, Nepalgunj

32-year-old Dipu Malla of Nepalgunj Municipality, who was severely injured after police allegedly thrashed him, is undergoing treatment at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Nepalgunj-based Teaching Hospital. Critically injured Dipu, who was reportedly thrashed by police on Monday night, is yet to regain consciousness, according to his relative Bishnu Khadka, who is taking care of him at the hospital. It is learned that police thrashed Dipu after an argument at the Nepalgunj-based Teaching Hospital. He came to the hospital to admit his friend injured in a motorcycle accident. Caretaker Khadka informed that the hospital asked him to take Dipu to another hospital for further treatment if he cannot regain consciousness by Tuesday afternoon. "When Dipu took the injured to the hospital, police deployed there yelled at him saying that alcohol was responsible for the accident," Khadka said. "Then Dipu argued with police and he was badly thrashed," Khadka added. A security guard of the hospital, Manbahadur Thapa, an eyewitness, also said that police beat up Dipu. "I saw four policemen kicking him with their boots," he said. Student leaders Mohit Shah and Ramesh Timilsina informed that the District Police Officer (DPO), Banke called the eyewitness Thapa and pressured him to change his statement. Meanwhile, DPO Chief Superintendent of Police (SP) Tek Prasad Rai said that he learned about the incident only on Tuesday morning. Rai informed that he has assigned inspector Bir Bahadur to investigate the matter. "Last night we were informed that drunken boys were involved in some mischievous activities. But the relatives informed about police's thrashing," SP Rai said. "But I am not convinced if police thrashed him that badly."
