This is the second bi-monthly report based on the NepalMonitor.org dataset, summarizing trends or patterns in incidents in key categories of human rights abuses, gender-based violence, or security threats. The bi-monthly also offers basic descriptive statistics on the incidence of each category in the dataset.

For July and August 2016, NepalMonitor.org recorded a total of 531 reports related to human rights and security incidents in Nepal. This compares to 474 reports recorded during the previous months of May and June .

Gender-Based Violence

Gender-Based Violence continues to be a category with the highest number of reports in our dataset. For the months of July and August, a total of 186 reports related to GBV were recorded. The districts with the highest number of incidents included Saptari with 14, Kanchanpur and Banke with 10 each, and Ilam and Siraha with 9 reports each related to Gender-Based Violence. Dang, Kaski and Khotang also recorded a relatively high number of incidents in this category .



Incidents of Gender-Based Violence by Type

Among the recorded incidents related to Gender-Based Violence, 99 featured rape or attempted rape, 53 child abuse, 44 domestic violence, 14 human trafficking and 13 sexual abuse, harassment or assault. There were also 18 marriage related reports during these two months, mostly concerning polygamy, child marriage or dowry. Some of the sub-categories overlap causing the total number of incidents when added for each category to be greater than 186.


Human Rights

Besides incidents of Gender-Based Violence, NepalMonitor also maps a number of categories related to different aspects of Human Rights. Among those were 10 reports related to witchcraft allegations in July and August. Similarly, 4 incidents of torture, 5 of caste discrimination and 1 incidents related to FIR refusal were recorded for the period.

Incidents Related to Protests

In July and August, there were 33 security incidents related to protests recorded in total. Among them, Biplov-led CPN Maoist were involved as main actor in 12 incidents (some of them related to an educational strike called by the party on August 15), Nepali Congress in 5 and CPN-UML or affiliates in 3 incidents. Similarly, local communities were mentioned as main actor in 8 and business communities in 2 of the incidents recorded.
