Chaupadi Tradition Persists

2012-11-28

Mugu/November 27

The malpractice of Chaupadi still exists in Mugu owing to the conventional thought that a misfortune might befall them if Gods and Shaman get angry.

Traditionally, women stay in cow sheds and abandoned house from the beginning of the menstrual cycle to the fifth day and they return home the sixth day after 'purifying' themselves by bathing with ash water for the fear that their ancient Gods might be irked.

According to a local Ram Bahadur Buda of Rara1, women have to compulsorily stay outside the house during their menstruation period as the Gods would get angry if they enter inside house within this period. He added that the society ostracizes those who do not follow this tradition.
