Kidnap bid foiled, three suspects nabbed

2016-09-01

Bagmati, Kathmandu, Kathmandu

Police have arrested three persons from different places of Kathmandu Valley for allegedly threatening to ‘kidnap and kill’ a remittance company operator. The suspects held by the Metropolitan Police Crime Division yesterday are Rabin Gurung (27), Jibaji Gurung (24) of Gorkha and Bishnu Magar aka Michael (24) of Ramechhap. Rabin (Passport No. HB894419), a Canadian citizen of Nepali origin, was the mastermind behind the incident, said police. The MPCD said Ganesh Man Shrestha, operator of Banasthali-based Anish Remittance, had lodged a complaint against two masked men, who allegedly broke into his office on September 1 wielding a ‘fake pistol’ and a khukuri and demanded Rs 200,000. “They threatened to kidnap and bury Shrestha alive if their demand was not met,” said the MPCD. Fearful Shrestha then had offered to give them a cheque but they refused and told the victim to manage cash within a few days. Shrestha, in the meantime, informed police about the threat despite being warned by the extortionists against it. According to the MPCD, the suspects left a letter on the veranda of the victim’s house yesterday claiming they knew about the complaint lodged against them with the law enforcement agency and thus the ransom amount had been raised to Rs 500,000. Police had swung into action after the letter was found yesterday. The trio were arrested in possession of a motorcycle, two khukuris and a fake pistol, among other things. Further investigation is under way, said police.
