Police rescues 96 people from being trafficked

The police in Mugu district on Saturday rescued 96 people from being trafficked to Kathmandu. Among those being trafficked, 24 are below 16 years old and many women. They were being taken by bus when the police intercepted it in Gamgadhi, the district headquarters. The police acted on information they received that many people were being taken to Kathmandu with the promise of finding them work there and providing free education to their children. They were promised jobs at the Shankar Brick Kiln at Dakshinkali in Kathmandu, it is stated. Most of the people are from Karkibada, Ruga, Rowa and Shreenagar VDCs in the district. According to police, among the rescued people, 42 are from Shreenagar VDC, 31 from Rowa VDC, 17 from Karkibada VDC and seven from Ruga VDC. Police have arrested 30-year-old Puran Punmagar of Bijauri VDC-6, Dang district and 29-year-old Mamata Gharti of Seri VDC-6, Mugu district on the charge of attempting to traffic people. Punmagar is said to be the owner of the brick kiln while Gharti is his contact person in Mugu. All those being trafficked are from the Dalit community.
