Cadres of Nepal Students’ Union, the student wing of main opposition Nepali Congress, clashed outside party office in Sanepa, Lalitpur on Sunday following a dispute over setting age limit for union membership. Two factions of the student union, who gathered to put pressure on the party leadership to endorse the amended party statute, hurled stones at each other.
The faction led by student leader Kundan Aryal has been demanding that there should be age limit of 32-year-old for eligibility to contest in the election of its student union, while the other faction under former president Nain Singh Mahar has been stiffly opposing the age limit criteria for membership.
The clash between the opposite factions ensued outside the party office when the leaders were holding informal discussions before the commencement of party Central Working Committee meeting slated for 11 am. Police said the two sides hurled water bottles at each other before resorting to a violent exchange of stones and brickbats.
As the situation turned tense, police personnel intervened and wielded batons to take the situation under control. A few students and a journalist were injured in the clash, sources said. Among the injured, the condition of Jitendra Chhetri is said to be critical.
