2019-05-07

Locals of Dhankuta district today organised chakkajam for an hour after Province 1 Assembly decided to make Biratnagar the permanent headquarters of the province.

Provincial Headquarters Construction Protest Committee-led group called the chakkajam from 12:00 noon till 1:00 pm along the Koshi Highway at Zeropoint in Dhankuta today.

Coordinator of the protest committee Sundar Babu Shrestha said that they were compelled to organise the chakkajam as the identity and history of Dhankuta was lost after Biratnagar was announced as the provincial capital.

“Dhankuta is qualifies in terms of infrastructure to become the provincial headquarters,” he added.

Due to the chakkajam, hundreds of vehicle heading towards Dharan of Sunsari from Tehrathum, Bhojpur and Sankhuwasabha were stranded. The locals also chanted slogans and organised a corner meeting at Zeropoint.

The protest committee also decided to continue the chakkajam on a daily basis.

Another campaigner Bijaya Santoshi Rai said chakkajam would also be organised from 3:00 to 4:00pm at the same place.

The protest committee said that Dhankuta had the required physical infrastructure for the headquarters and was located centrally, besides being well-connected with roads from all the districts.
