Police arrested Umesh Yadav, the Samajwadi Party leader, on the charge of beating a policeman on duty by consuming alcohol. He was the mayoral candidate for the chairperson of the Biratnagar Municipality in the local level elections. DSP Rajkumar Khizu of the District Police Office, Morang said that the assaulted policeman Shyam Kumar Chaudhary was on duty at Biratnagar Roadshak Chowk on August 13. Police stopped Yadav after finding that he was riding the bike inebriated. After being stopped, Yadav manhandled the police constable Shyam Kumar Chaudhary.
Yadav was a candidate for the Mayor from alliance of the Federal Socialist Forum and the then CPN(Maoist) in the local level elections. He was also the former president of the Morang district committee of the then Federal Socialist Forum.
