Checks Handed Over to Combatants amidst Disputes

The combatants based in PLA's fourth division cantonment at Kawasoti Hattikhor have complained that they were being forced to leave the checks behind at the cantonment. They said that those who refused to hand over the checks were being admonished and even manhandled.

 

One female combants told INSEC DR on the condition of anonymity on Febraury 6 that the commanders collecting the checks provided by the committee.

 

She added many checks were snatched. "We fought together and share food from the same plate during the war. Now, watching the scene today, I regretted my involvement in war'. The combatant said she aslo refused to hand over the checks which led to some shoving.

 

Today, the combatants, who chose to go for retirement, were given retirement amount and travel expenses out of which UCPN-M is extracting 25 per cent. The commanders oversaw the combatants accepting checks and were told to deposit them at the party office.

 

When asked about the issue, the cantonment commander James said it was an absolute lie adding such incident had occurred at Hattikhor and other cantonments. He claimed it was a fabrication disseminated by those hoping to obstruct peace process.

 

At first division at Chulachuli of Topgachhi7 Jhapa, the distribution of the money was halted on the second day on February 5 after the injured and disabled combants interrupted the process. On February 4, checks were distributed to 93 who had chosen voluntary retirement while 87 were schedule to get their checks on February 5.

 

The disqualified combatants also protested the process demanding relief for them. They imposed closure of vehicular movement on Kerakha section of East-West Highway , near the first division for 45 minutes from 2 pm.
