On July 17, youths affiliated to the Nepali Congress and Janata Samajbadi Party chanted slogans against Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and torched the effigy of Minister of Water Supply Bina Magar at Bhanu Chowk in Janakpur.
The protesters stated that the death of 25-year-old Engineer Satish Kumar Goit during the tunnel test of Melamchi Drinking Water Project was because of the negligence of the government. The vice-chairman of Nepal Tarun Dal Dhanusha, Rakesh Bikram Shah, demanded compensation for the family of the deceased and an impartial investigation regarding the incident.
Two persons had gone missing when gate number 17 of the Melamchi Drinking Water Project burst on July 14.
