Man arrested on the charge of subjecting daughter-in-law to domestic violence over dowry

Police on October 7 arrested 65-year-old Farmud Khatun of Agnisair Krishnasavaran Rural Municipality -5, Bakdhuwa on the charge of subjecting his 26-year-old daughter-in-law Sabnab Khatun (also known as Manita Kumari Chaudhary) to domestic violence demanding dowry.

On September 30, the victim had lodged a complaint of domestic violence against her father-in-law, 60-year-old mother-in-law Jahrun Khatun, 27-year-old sister-in-law Ajmerul Khatun and 30-year-old brother-in-law Ansarul Mian. According to the victim, the accused sent her husband Azad away from the house and deprived her of contact with him. The police have arrested Farmud while the rest of his family members are on the run. 

Police have assured that action would be taken as per Section 174 of the Civil Crimes (Code) Act, 2017 AD. Sub-section 3 of the same section clarifies the provision that no one can be harassed or subjected to any inhuman or degrading treatment for demanding dowry or not giving dowry after marriage. The law stipulates imprisonment for up to five years or a fine of up to Rs. 50,000 or both.
