Rape Victim Ostracized, Restricted from Performing Final Rites

Dhading/July 3 Locals have imposed restrictions on a rape victim, barring her from performing final rites for not withdrawing rape case from the District Court. The victim, a single woman, was not allowed to perform final rites by the locals on July 2. A diktat was issued by the villagers not to attend the final rites of the victim's mother-in-law on July 2. The neighbors did not show up in the religious ceremony owing to the threat of facing similar consequences. Some persons from another village helped her for cremation of her mother-in-law despite the locals issuing threats and writing down their names. The victim said that she could not begin the religious ceremony on July 3 as no priests arrived at her house following threats by the locals. A group, including local Nepali Congress cadre Balram Simkhada and teacher of local school Mohan Simkhada threatened villagers not to support the victim in performing final rites. The victim was fired from her job as office assistant in the Baljyoti Primary School in Dhola VDC-2 on March 23, 2014 for not withdrawing her rape case. She was also threatened of death at various occasions at her home because of which her two sons left home. She was raped by Sandip Simkhada, 24, on November 23, 2013 on charge of not casting vote for Nepali Congress. Simkhada is a relative to the victim. The accused threatened her repeatedly to withdraw the case against him after she filed a rape complaint against him on November 28. The victim has been barred from social activities owing to the situation created by the accused. Woman rights activist Radhika Sapkota said that the victim has been barred from buying commodities in the local shop.
