People of Dozens of VDC Deprived of Health Services

Taplejung, Darjanau gabisa ka basinda swastya sewa pauna bata banchit. Thousands of villagers of remote VDCs have been deprived of health services in the district. Tapethok Sub-Health Post has been shut for the past five months. The absence of Assistant Health Worker (AHW) and Village Health Worker (VHW) had lead to the closure. In a bid to keep the health services accessible, the villagers have raised money to support an Assistant Nurse Midwife (ANM), Bimala Limbu. She is paid Rs 11,000. The locals they were force to take the measure to get basis health facilities. One local Amir Limbu said, Lack of health workers had even people suffer as there was no one to distribute paracetamol but add that they would not be able to support her all the time. The Mother and Children Worker of the Olangchulang health center died in 10 years ago. A local Tashi Sherpa said he did not remember any arrival of AHW and with the death of MCWF the centre is padlocked following her death. He added that even to get treatment of common cold and fever, they have to travel for hours to reach a health centre at Lelep. The area is two days of walk from district headquarters. Chief of District Health Office, Dr Surya Bahadur Gurung accepted that lack of staffs had limited the services. He also complained that Health Service Department and the Health Ministry had not taken any action against that organization. According to the health office, of 53 health centers, 26 had no personnel while 14 of 39 sub-health post were vacant.
