KHOTANG: A staff at a micro-hydro project of Khotang died and another was injured after they were buried in a landslide at Phedi VDC of the district yesterday night. The deceased has been identified as Asta Kumar Rai, 36, of Phedi VDC. Locals extracted his body from the landslide yesterday. The injured has been identified as Prabin Rai, 29, of the VDC, said police. As many as 30 people of eight families have been displaced due to heavy rainfall. The landslide, which fell from some 60 metres above, has also destroyed the power house of the district’s hydro project. Meanwhile, Chief District Officer Govinda Sapkota, said that 39 Nepali Army Personnel, 13 Armed Police Force and 17 Nepal Police have been deployed in Diktel to rescue landslide victims. He added that the displaced families have shifted to safer places. It is reported that another disaster might occur due to continuous downpour. “Five families of Phedi VDC, one family each from Baspani, Kharmi and Pathema VDCs were displaced due to the landslide. Bholamani Rai’s family was also displaced after his house cracked due to the landslide at Baspani VDC. A house belonging to Kharabmani Rai was swept away,” informed DSP, Govinda Shah. He said that casualties are yet to be reported.He also added that cow sheds were destroyed along with it.Dhan Kumar Rai, a local, said that the landslide mostly affected Phedi VDC wards 1, 2, 3, 5 and 9. According to Rai the landslide has damaged the micro hydro project of Nokti Tapkhola at Phedi VDC. The locals said that electricity service has been halted after the project was damaged.
