Accused of Rape Attempt Acquitted

Jhapa, Balatkar prayash ka aropit lai adalat duwara safai. Basanta Majhi, 35, of Maheshpur VDC-9, on August 21, has been acquitted by District Court from the charge of attempted rape of his neighboring 17-year-old girl. According to defending lawyer Benu Sitaula, Majhi was released due to lack of sufficient evidence. Majhi was accused of trying to rape the girl when she had gone to his home to watch television on June 28. The girl told her elder sister about the incident on the same night which led to his arrest by the police around 9 pm same day. He was charged on June 29 and was remanded in jail by District Court judge Deepak Khanal on July 17. Khanal had put the case for continuous hearing. The medical checkup of the girl was conducted at Mechi Zonal Hospital. The court acquitted Majhi of the charge of attempted rape but suggested that he could be charged with intention of rape or sexual harassment.
