Cadre of CPN-UML seriously injured in police beating in Dhankuta

33-year-old Niran Sangsnun Rai a CPN-UML cadre from Sahidbhumi rural municipality-3 in Dhankuta was injured due to physical assault from police on May 24. According to the police, Rai sustained serious injuries on his head, hands and legs. After the district hospital was unable to treat him, he was sent to Neuro hospital Biratnagar for further treatment. Hem Kumar Rai,  chairperson of ward 6 claimed that Niran was brutally beaten by police while he tried to escape them. 

According to SP Laxmi Raj Adhikari of the District Police Office, the incident was part of a series of incident that took place after a clash at CPN-UML's victory rally on May 22. According to Ajan Rai, a group of youths carrying weapons led by Nepali Congress ward chairperson Bikash Rai had chased UML cadres from the victory rally on May 22. Later UML cadres attacked Nepali Congress cadres in retaliation. Congress cadres who were beaten during the retaliation attack filed a complaint at the police. Nepali Congress also issued a statement condemning attack on its cadres. Niran was also named as one of the attackers according to police.
