2014-09-02

Janakpur, Janakpur band le janjivan prabhavit. JANAKPUR, SEP 02 - Normal life has been adversely affected in Janakpur of Dhanusa district on Monday due to banda imposed by Joint Struggle Committee of various political parties to protest Janakpur Municipality’s alleged preparation to construct landfill site at Shivapur in Dhanusa. The protesters have been demanding that the landfill site should instead be constructed at Fulgama VDC. Educational institutions including most of shops in the municipality remained closed while vehicular movement came to a grinding halt. The agitators also torched newspapers including Kantipur daily at Piradi Chowk, saying that the media failed to carry news about the issue. A vehicle was also vandalized in the municipality as protesters continued to stage demonstration at various places in the district. To construct a landfill site at Fulgama VDC as part of the Integrated Urban Dev Project worth around Rs 1.75 billion funded by the ADB, the ‘Save Asian Development Bank (ADB) Struggle Committee’, which also supported the protest, has already reached an agreement with the Guthi Sasthan of the Janaki Temple, a source said. Following the agreement, the Janakpur Municipality, which is responsible for obtaining the land for the landfill site, had leased around 13 bighas of land at Manihari Diha in Fulgama VDC. However, Minister for Physical Infrastructure and Transport Bimalendra Nidhi had asked authorities concerned to find an alternative place for the landfill site as the proposed site for the same was leased for the construction of proposed Rajashri Janak University. According to the source, the municipality is preparing to construct the landfill site at Shivapur and that the municipality is about to finalise the deal to lease 52 bighas of land of the Guthi Sasthan in the area for the purpose.
