The Federal Republic Front (FRF), a 19-party alliance led by the main opposition UCPN (Maoist), has decided to take to the streets to exert pressure on the ruling parties to bring a progressive constitution. A meeting of the FRF held at Singha Durbar on Sunday formed an 11-member taskforce entrusted with preparing plans for street protests. Opposition parties have been mulling street protests, after negotiations with the ruling Nepali Congress (NC) and CPN-UML on Saturday failed to make any headway. The opposition side had decide to withdraw street protests after visiting foreign dignitaries during the SAARC summit in November urged political parties to promulgate a new statue through consensus. “The ruling parties have backtracked from past agreements and they are lobbing for status quo. They want a regressive constitution. So we are left with no option but to take to the streets,” said Laxman Lal Karna, co-chairman of Shadbhavana party. Krishna Bahadur Mahara of UCPN (Maoist), Hridayesh Tripathi of Tarai Madhesh Democratic Party, Karna of Shadbhavana party and Jeetendra Dev of Madhesi Peoples Right Forum -Democratic, among others, are members in the taskforce. According to Karna, they will propose a modality of protests at the meeting of FRF scheduled for Monday afternoon. The 19-party alliance has asked Constituent Assembly (CA) Chairman Subas Nembang not to take any decision without their consent in the CA.
