Twenty-five-year-old Rihana Shesh Dhapali of Laxmanpur-8 in the district, who was severely hurt as her husband attempted to murder her by burn ing her alive, has appealed Home Minister Bam Dev Gautam to arrest the perpetrator. Police are yet to locate the whereabouts of husband Fareed Shesh even nine months after the incident. “When will the perpetrator be held and justice delivered?” read the note handed over by Rihana to human rights activists who reached her house. She requested the rights activists to get the note to the Home Minister, stating that she was denied justice. Living with her maternal family at Heerminiya-8 at present, economically deprived and emotionally shattered Rihana also expressed her desire to study. “She expected assistance for the purpose,” said Murari Kharel, regional office chief of the National Human Rights Commission. Kharel said they will do their best to ensure that the note gets to Minister Gautam. Fareed had attempted to murder Rihana on March 17 accusing her of not bringing a motorcycle and a buffalo in dowry. As she was eight months pregnant at that time, she gave birth to a still born following the incident. Fareed and his parents moved to India after the incident became public. Police claimed they are searching for the culprits. But, they are yet to make any headway into the case. The incident came to light when Rihana’s father reached Fareed’s house to take an account of the situation after learning that Fareed had taken her to a hospital in the bordering Indian town of Baharaich. Demanding extreme punishment to the culprits, Rihana’s mother Nasirul appealed all the concerned to bring the guilty to book. Rihana has suffered burn injuries on both her legs along with other body parts. While the burn injuries on her hands and body have started healing, her left leg has been weakened. She is still visiting hospital time to time for treatment. Meanwhile, Surendra Karki, representative of Burning Violence Survivor, a Nepalgunj-based organisation, has provided five goats to the victim with an intention to help her earn a living.
