Supporters of identity-based federalism stage protest

 Supporters of identity-based federalism have staged demonstrations at Babarmahal in Baneshwor, Kathmandu. Addressing the occupy New Baneshwor campaign on Wednesday, President of Nepal Federation of Indigenous Nationalities (Nefin) and newly nominated lawmaker Nagendra Kumal said that they will not back down from 9-point and 20-point agreements signed with indigenous people in the past. “We are committed to our issues and demands and we cannot arrive at consensus by moving back from the demands of indigenous people ,” said Kumal. At the protest rally, National Indigenous Women Federation Chairperson Shanti Jirel said the key demand of indigenous people is the identity-based federalism . “The new constitution should guarantee the rights of indigenous people ,” said chairperson Jirel. “We will continue our agitation until the demands of indigenous people are addressed.” The rally that started from Babarmahal converted into a protest assembly near Nayabaneshwor Chok. Former Nefin President Rajkumar Lekhi and lawmaker Pemba Bhote addressed the assembly. Meanwhile, the Nepal Federation of Indigenous Journalists condemned the attack on press and vandalism of press vehicles during the general strike called jointly by the UCPN (Maoist) led 30-party alliance, CPN-Maoist and Padma Ratna Tuladhar led Adibasi Janjati Mahasangh on Tuesday.
