The district court of Khotang has sentenced Bhum Raj Rai to one year in prison and fined him rupees ten thousand on the charge of polygamy. Bhumi Raj Rai and his second wife of Mauwabote-6, Khotang were arrested after a complaint was registered by his first wife.

According to Bhumi's first wife, the two got married while she was in prison. She also informed that her husband immediately married his second wife after returning home from abroad instead of supporting her and looking after the children. Bhumi's first wife was serving a prison sentence when he was abroad. She had reportedly killed her brother-in-law Dil Kumar Rai while defending herself from his attempted rape.
