Anjali Sharma's in-laws took her in a rickshaw on June 16 to India for treatment. But later Sharma's dead body was recovered from Sitamadhi of Bihar, India. Sharma was married to Shankhar Sharma five years ago and her family had sent her with a of cash Rs 1.5 million, items of household use and gold jewelries in dowry on the day of her marriage. The couple have two children. However, her in-laws had been physically torturing her, demanding more, according to Lalit Prasad Shah, Anjali's brother. "Anjali used to tell me over phone that her in-laws thrashed her time and again," Shah said, adding, "We had believed her torture would end after we settled the matter once in the presence of villagers." He informed that the in-laws used to abuse her sister physically demanding additional dowry. After Anjali's family reported the matter to Women and Children Cell at District Police Office in Parsa, the police made her in-laws promise that they would end the mistreatment. Anjali's parents learned about her death from Indian newspapers. "We read the newspapers and saw the photo and recognized Anjali," Digambar Prasad Shah, Anjali's uncle told Republica, adding, "We reached Sitamadi and the police allowed us to take the body after completing the process." The body has been taken to Narayani Sub-Regional Hospital for postmortem. According to the police, the in-laws of Anjali are at large, with their house locked. "This is a serious crime. The family has already filed a complaint here," said Superintendent of Police Dibesh Lohani. He added that the police have launched the search to arrest the absconding family.
