Journalist arrested for ‘no reason’

Journalist Debendra Raj Paudel of Dainik Nepalgunj said Police Inspector Dipendra Kumar Pal arrested him from Gharbaritol on Tuesday night for no reason at all. He said he was arrested though he showed his identity card and plates of the paper. The journalist, who was released at around midnight, accused police of arresting him in order to threaten. Meanwhile, after the Banke chapter of the Federation of Nepali Journalists condemned the incident, Chief District Officer Bed Prakash Lekhak and acting police chief in the district Sushil Singh Rathaur assured that such incidents will not be repeated. The Regional police Office said it has formed a team to investigate the matter. Sources said Inspector Pal was drunk on Tuesday night and had also arrested 15 Muslim youths who were returning to their home from a mosque. The youths too have demanded action against the official.
