One killed in police firing in Birgunj, 3 critical

(update) One person has died when police opened fire in the clash that ensued between protesters and police in Birgunj. Three others were critically injured from bullets. The deceased has been identified as Shatrughan Patel from Pakaha of Mainpur VDC. Over two dozen others were injured during the clash. Birgunj turned tense after protesters defied curfew to take out demonstration rallies against the new constitution from different areas of the city including Nagawa, Ranighat, Shreepur, Buspark, Bahuari, Sirsiya Dry Port and Itiyahi. The participants carried black flags to protest the new constitution.

Update............ 17 injured, 2 airlifted to Kathmandu. 17 others were injured when security personnel opened fire on protesters during a violent demonstration at Maisthan of Birgunj, the district headquarters of Parsa, a few hours before the promulgation of Nepal’s Constitution 2072 on Sunday afternoon. The deceased has been identified as Shatrughan Patel (30) from Pakahamainpur of Parsa district. Two of the injured are said to be in critical condition. Former State Minister Karima Begam is among the injured. Most of the injured are receiving treatment at the Birgunj-based Narayani Sub-Regional Hospital. Patel’s body has been kept at the same health facility. The protesters are clashing with the security personnel at Maisthan.
