One Killed In Police Firing, Eight Injured

One person died and eight people were injured when the police opened fire to disperse a mob on July 5. The people were protesting the police arrest of a man, accused in road accident case at Garuda of Rautahat District.

 

Six policemen were also injured when the locals pelted stones against them.

Ramod Sah Jaiswal, 35, of Mahamadpur7 was shot in the chest. The injured included Dinesh Yadav, 25, of Mahamadpur7 and Birodhi Ray Yadav, 27, of Pothiyahi9. Dinesh was shot in the chest and Birodhi in the leg. Both have been taken to TU Teaching Hospital in Kathmandu. 

 

Paspat Ray, Binod Ray Yadav, Rajesh Yadav, Bholi Sah, Birbhuwan Sah and Nibas Ray Yadav of Mahamadpur6 were injured when police charged lathi and fired teargas. They are being treated at Garuda Hospital.

 

Likewise, APF inspector Suman Lamichhane, 35, and Garuda Police Office Inspector Ram Narayan Majhi were among the injured policemen.

 

The police team had gone to remove the obstructions placed by the locals on a bridge on Gaur-Chandranighapur section saying that the police had taken wrong man in custody over the death of man who was run over by a tractor on June 28.

 

Inspector Majhi informed that the police had fired 22 rounds of bullet and 29 rounds of tear gas. He added that the firing was an act of self-defence.

 

The witnesses claimed that as the deceased Jaiswal and injured Dinesh were shot in the chest, it was clear that the police intended to kill the protestors.

 

Meanwhile, the Government of Nepal has stated that the incident would be investigated adding that the family of the victims would be provided some relief.
