Province 1, Morang, Rangeli, Ward 6

Three persons were killed in police firing after agitating Madhesi demonstrators tried to disrupt programs organized by Youth Force (YF), the youth wing of CPN-UML, in Morang district on Thursday. Over 15 others were injured in the incident. Draupadi Devi Chaudhary, 58, of Rangeli and Shibu Majhi, 20, of Dayniya, breathed their last on the spot while Mahadev Rishidev, 28, of Bardanga, succumbed to bullet injuries while undergoing treatment at Biratnagar-based Golden Hospital. According to Krishna Chaudhary, husband of the deceased woman, she was shot while returning from a pooja. The incident took place at Rangeli and Dayniya after agitating United Democratic Madhesi Front (UDMF) cadres tried to disrupt the YF's constitution awareness program. Immediately after the death of Chaudhary, police clashed with irate UDMF cadres at Dayniya as the latter tried to torch a YF vehicle. Majhi died at Dayniya after police opened fire to bring the situation under control. Rishidev, who was referred from Koshi Zonal Hospital, died at Golden Hospital during treatment, according to the hospital director, Sanatan Mandal. Over a dozen injured have been receiving treatment at Golden Hospital. Director Mandal said that most of the injured had suffered cuts by khukuri. Meanwhile, Assistant Chief District Officer (CDO) Devi Bahadur Bhandari confirmed the death of three persons in police firing. The situation, that had taken a nasty turn following the incident at Rangeli, is now under the control of security personnel, Bhandari informed. The YF had constructed a stage for the program in front of the Area Police Office at Rangeli. A huge number of security personnel was deployed with a view to avert possible clashes. Prime Minister KP Oli was supposed to attend the constitution awareness program. Following the FY's announcement of the program, UDMF cadres had called a two-day strike on Wednesday and Thursday to protest his visit and the awareness program. Following the three death, Biratnagar remained close as the operation of road vehicles came to a standstill.
