Biplav Maoists torch taxis in Kathmandu

(Update)--Cadres of CPN Maoist torched at least two taxis in the Capital on Monday morning after they came to the road despite a strike imposed by the Maoist outfit led by Netra Bikram Chand ‘Biplav’. According to traffic police, one taxi each was set on fire at Gongabu and New Baneshwar. According to Kathmandu Police Campus Chief Bikram Singh Thapa, police have arrested Yogendra Kumal, chairman of a trade union close to the rebel Maoists, on the charges of burning a taxi at Min Bhawan. Kumal, who was arrested on the charges of setting fire to a taxi during the previous bandh, was released within a few days. "I will take action as he was arrested in the same incident for the second time," said Thapa. Police have arrested 70 people from Kathmandu. According to Lalitpur Police Chief Pitamber Adhikari, three people have been arrested in Lalitpur. Some private vehicles are seen on the road, while public ones have remained off the road.


(Updated)-- Police have arrested some 70 cadres of the Netra Bikram Chand-led CPN Maoist from different parts of Kathmandu Valley during the nationwide strike enforced by the party on Monday. Chief at Metropolitan Police Range, Kathmandu SSP Bikram Singh Thapa said that some of the protesters were arrested with petrol, adding that an investigation was underway. The strike enforcers allegedly set two taxis on fire at Minbhawan and Gongabu in the wee hours this morning. Police said a taxi, Ba 1 Jha 5262, might have been set on fire by the owner at Minbhawan to claim the insurance.
