Shanti Pariyar is a professional nurse. She works at Fewa City Hospital in Pokhara. In the second week of mid-June, she found out that her coworkers had been using ethnic slurs in a group chat of social media. Her co-workers who used racial slurs in the group chat on Facebook were Sushma Thapa of Pokhara Jalparoad, Susmita Kunwar of Hemjha, Nirmala Thapa of Nayagaun, Seemana Malla and Sushma Gurung and Isha Pun.
Pariyar had learned about the secret group chat from one of the group's friends. She complained to the hospital administration after finding out that her coworkers were using vulgar words to belittle her character. The hospital did not take any actions other than making the accused apologize to the victim. Claiming that her colleagues apologized only for completing the formalities, without feeling serious wrongdoing, she appealed to the Joint Dalit Conflict Committee, Kaski.
With the help of the committee, Pariyar then filed a complaint of racial discrimination in the police on June 27. Police then arrested five of the accused ten days after the filing of the complaint.
"We have arrested and detained them on the charge of racial discrimination," KC said, adding that they are also investigating other aspects of the case. He said it had been a long time since the case relating to the caste-based discrimination got registered in Kaski.
